Sharjah's relationship with books is constitutional: the emirate has invested more in libraries, publishing, and literary festivals than any of its neighbours. The Sharjah International Book Fair is one of the largest in the world. This isn't a city that needs to be convinced reading matters — it already knows.

The café scene in Sharjah has expanded significantly in the last five years. Al Majaz Waterfront has become a hub of independent coffee shops and cultural venues. The university belt around University City has generated a young, book-hungry community that doesn't always have easy access to lending infrastructure. That's where Koottar comes in.
