Quick take Al Ries helped introduce positioning through a landmark 1972 article series—nine years before Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind became a marketing classic.

Beyond the book jacket

Al Ries was an American marketing strategist and author who helped change how businesses think about brands. He is best known as a pioneer of positioning: the idea that successful marketing begins with finding a clear, distinctive place for a brand in the customer’s mind. Rather than trying to communicate every possible benefit, Ries urged companies to become strongly associated with one meaningful idea.

Born in Indianapolis in 1926, Ries served in the United States Merchant Marine and the Army before graduating from DePauw University in 1950. He began his career in General Electric’s advertising department, then moved to New York and worked at advertising agencies before co-founding his own agency in 1963.

In 1972, Ries and Jack Trout introduced the “Positioning Era” through a series of articles in Advertising Age. Their argument shifted attention away from what a company wanted to say and towards what an audience could realistically remember. The thinking developed into Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, published in 1981 and later adopted by businesses and universities around the world.

Ries continued developing practical frameworks in books including Marketing Warfare, The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing and Focus. In 1994, he formed Ries & Ries with his daughter, Laura Ries. They wrote five books together, including The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding and The Fall of Advertising & the Rise of PR, while advising organisations across industries and countries.

His later work explored how a memorable visual or concise verbal idea can reinforce a brand’s position. Across more than five decades, his message remained consistent: clarity, difference and focus are more powerful than trying to appeal to everyone.

“Success depends on finding an open hole in the mind and then becoming the first to fill it.”
